Paint Correction FAQs

Paint correction is one of the most misunderstood and misused detailing services that we offer. This section will answer some of the most common Frequently asked questions about paint correction, including what it is, how we use it on different types of vehicles, and why you should consider getting paint correction for your vehicle from our professional detailers.

Paint Correction is a term used by professional car detailers and car enthusiasts. It describes the process of restoring and rejuvenating the paintwork of a vehicle. It eliminates surface imperfections, that dull, oxidize or haze the surface. These imperfections include things like swirl marks, fine scratches, etching, holograms & buffer trails. The process involves the leveling of the paint’s clear coat with compound polishes and a rotary machine.

There are different grits of both compound and polishing pads. To reduce the amount of clear coat removed, we choose the least aggressive method as long as we achieve the ultimate results. The final step involves the protection of the corrected finish. We will apply a coating of your choice. You can choose from a wax, sealant, or upgrade to a ceramic paint coating.

The paint correction process, also known as machine polishing is a technique used to remove defects in the finish of your vehicle. There are three stages, with each stage requiring more time and effort than the last. The stages of machine polishing are Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 Machine Polishing. We will explain what each stage means below so you can better understand this process.

Stage 1 Paint Correction also known as a 1 step correction is the initial stage and is not as time-consuming or expensive. This process will require one type of pad to correct defects in your vehicle’s finish, such as light swirls and very light imperfections in your vehicle’s paint. Stage 1 and the polishing pad are generally not abrasive enough to remove visible swirl marks or scratches.

Stage 2 Paint Correction also known as a 2 step correction requires a polisher and two different types of pads (either wool or foam/microfiber), one for cutting and one for polishing. We use this technique on vehicles with moderate paint defects that cannot be removed in the previous step. This step requires using a cutting polish/compound with enough abrasion to remove swirl marks and light scratches.

Stage 3 Paint Correction also known as a 3 step correction requires a polisher and two or three different pads (either wool or foam/microfiber). This is used for vehicles with heavy swirl marks, scratches, and other paint defects, often very noticeable. We use a heavy cutting compound with a heavy cutting pad to remove those deeper swirl marks and scratches. The second step is done with a cutting polish and polishing pad to remove further swirls marks followed by the finishing polish and finishing pad to further refine the paintwork until a swirl, mar, and hologram-free finish is achieved.

Every stage is followed up with a paint protection coating such as a wax or paint sealant to protect your vehicle’s paintwork.

No, however, we do encourage investing in at least a one-step polishing correction. This will remove a minimum of 60% of swirl marks from your surface and create an extremely glossy finish to apply ceramic then over. Without correction, the ceramic coating will still create a strong bond with the paint surface and add gloss, however not to the degree that correction will. Please keep in mind that you are adding a thin layer of ceramic over the existing condition of your vehicle’s paint. So if there are any swirls, scratches, or other imperfections, they will not be able to be removed without removing the Ceramic Coating first.

It depends on your needs and wants for your particular vehicle. If you’re tired of the swirl marks in your paint, want to improve the gloss and shine of your current paint job, or are looking for more excellent protection than what you currently have with a wax or sealant, a paint correction service is a great option. How frequently you get your vehicle detailed will determine when best to invest in detailing services like this.

We offer several options for paint correction depending on the needs of our customers. We do provide complete corrections, as well as paint decontamination. Each of these will vary depending on your vehicle’s surface’s severity, type, and age.

There are many options when it comes to choosing an automotive detailer. However, few can provide the professional results that you require. With years of experience and training, your PDR specialist knows how to fix paint swirls without compromising the structural integrity of your paint. The result is a like-new surface that looks stunning and protects against harmful UV rays, environmental pollution, dirt, and more.

Most modern vehicles can benefit from paint correction services; however, it depends on what you want out of this process. For example: If you’ve recently had a detail done and would like to add additional protection and gloss, paint correction is a great option. If you have an older vehicle with paint damage, there are other options that will suit your needs better – such as a clear bra installation or even full repainting in some cases.

It is difficult to nail down exact prices for this process due to the fact that each car’s surface can be so different. However, you can expect to pay anywhere between $500 and $1000 depending on the severity of your paint’s condition. We do provide a free in-person evaluation at our shop to give you an exact price prior to booking your service.

It is hard to gauge whether or not this process will be worth it for you if you do not know what kind of results are possible with professional detailing services. We encourage you to request a quote for your vehicle so that we can provide an accurate estimate. Additionally, it is beneficial that you book an appointment with one of our managers to discuss which process will be best suited for the condition and needs of your paint surface.

Yes! The techniques used by San Antonio Auto Detailing are 100% safe for your vehicle’s paint job. Our aim is to provide you with the best service possible, while also protecting and preserving your car surface.

Paint correction, or paint refinishing as some call it, is a complete process that removes all of those annoying swirl marks from your vehicle’s finish. In addition to polishing out these imperfections, we apply multiple layers of protection using one of our professional-grade paint coating services.
